Heimburg Castle
Germany, Germany
Heimburg Castle is a medieval hilltop ruin in the Harz Mountains near Blankenburg, Germany, likely built around 1070 by Emperor Henry IV to defend key mining areas and routes to the imperial Bodfeld hunting grounds.
Destroyed by Saxon forces in 1073 during uprisings and again in 1123 after the Battle of Welfesholz, it was rebuilt by Henry the Lion around 1143 and held by the von Heimburg family before passing to the Counts of Regenstein-Heimburg until their line ended in 1599.
Further ruined in the Thirty Years' War, its remnants—including walls, towers, a palace foundation, and double ringworks—now offer hikers panoramic views amid a scenic landscape park.
