Heimburg in Niederheimbach
Niederheimbach, Germany, Germany
Heimburg in Niederheimbach is a medieval hilltop castle ruin located in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage area in Rhineland‑Palatinate, Germany.
It sits on a rocky spur above the small wine village of Niederheimbach, between Bingen and Bacharach, overlooking the Rhine River and the surrounding vineyards. Built between about 1294 and 1305 by the Archbishop of Mainz, Gerhard II von Eppstein, it originally functioned as a border fortification against the nearby Palatinate‑controlled castles of Sooneck and Reichenstein rather than as a noble residence.
Over time the fortress was reinforced and later lay in ruins, but parts were reworked in the 19th century in a historicist style, making it a picturesque example of a romantically reconstructed castle site that visitors can explore today.
