Heldenburg
Einbeck, Germany, Germany
Heldenburg is a medieval hilltop castle ruin near the village of Salzderhelden, about five kilometers from Einbeck in Lower Saxony, Germany.
It was built in the 13th century by the counts of Dassel and the Welf dukes primarily to protect a local salt spring, later becoming the main residence of the dukes of the Welf principality of Grubenhagen from 1291 until their line died out in 1596.
The site stands on a limestone spur above the Leine valley, with visible stone walls, a chapel, a spiral‑staircase tower, and former cellars that illustrate late medieval German building methods.
The ruin was extensively restored between 1983 and 1988, and today a circular path with information panels guides visitors through the remains, offering both a clear view into the former courtyard and panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
