Herat Central Blue Mosque
Herat, Afghanistan, Afghanistan
The Herat Central Blue Mosque, commonly called the Friday Mosque of Herat, is Afghanistan’s finest Islamic building and one of Central Asia’s greatest architectural masterpieces, located in the heart of Herat’s Old City. Founded in 1200 by the Ghurid Sultan Ghiyasuddin, the mosque was destroyed and rebuilt several times, most famously restored in the 15th century by the Timurids, who covered its walls and minarets with brilliant blue mosaic tiles featuring intricate geometric patterns, floral designs and Quranic calligraphy, giving the mosque its “Blue Mosque” name. The vast complex measures 180 by 120 meters and follows the classic four-iwan plan: a large central courtyard nearly 100 meters long surrounded by arcaded walls and four grand vaulted halls, with two huge minarets flanking the main iwan and hundreds of domes and pillars throughout. Almost every square meter is adorned with breathtaking tile mosaic, and the site continues to operate as an active Friday mosque, a historic center for Islamic law and theology, and home to a traditional tile workshop that has restored and added designs since the 1940s. Widely regarded as a masterpiece of tile mosaic art and spiritual architecture, the mosque remains a must-see landmark that showcases Herat’s rich cultural heritage and Afghanistan’s Islamic artistic legacy.
