Verified Heronswood Garden

Washington State, United States

Heronswood Garden in Washington State, established in 1987 by botanist Dan Hinkley and architect Robert Jones, is a renowned botanical garden located in Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula.

It started as a private sanctuary showcasing rare and unusual plants collected during global botanical expeditions by Hinkley, who sought to introduce unique species from Asia, South America, Europe, and other regions to Pacific Northwest gardens.

The garden expanded over time into a public space celebrated internationally for its exceptional plant collections, including native and exotic trees, shrubs, and perennials, and served as a center for plant conservation and education. In 2000, it was bought by W. Atlee Burpee Company, which unfortunately led to neglect after their bankruptcy, but in 2012, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe purchased Heronswood, beginning its revival as an indigenous-owned botanical sanctuary.

Today, it continues to nurture a diverse array of plants, emphasizing environmental sustainability, and connects visitors with its rich botanical and cultural heritage.
