Herzberg Castle
Breitenbach am Herzberg, Germany, Germany
Herzberg Castle overlooks Breitenbach am Herzberg in Hesse, Germany, constructed between 1290 and 1298 by Heinrich von Romrod along the ancient trade route "Kurze Hessen" as a strategic fortress granted by the Landgraves of Hesse.
It served as a key stronghold for the Sternerbund knights against Hessian expansion in 1372-1373, withstood multiple sieges including during the Thirty Years' and Seven Years' Wars, and was expanded into a fortress by the Barons of Dörnberg from 1477 onward, featuring extensive earthworks that remain visible today.
Never successfully captured despite numerous assaults, the castle lost military importance after 1788 and now stands as a historic ruin amid scenic hiking trails.
