Hetlinger Schanze
Hetlingen, Germany, Germany
Hetlinger Schanze is a historic field fortification and beach area in Hetlingen, Pinneberg district, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, along the Elbe River opposite Lühesand.
Built around 1659 after Swedish raids in 1658 destroyed local farms and Uetersen, it was prompted by landowner Detlef von Ahlefeldt to Danish King Frederik III as a defensive earthwork with a circular wall and four bastions, successfully repelling Swedish attacks.
Expanded in 1672 by King Christian V into a star-shaped redoubt with 5.5-meter-high walls, a 900-meter dike, and cannons to control the narrow Elbe, it served military and customs roles until deemed obsolete in 1768 and partially demolished, leaving a farmstead that persists today.
Now part of Schleswig-Holstein's largest nature reserve, Haseldorfer Binnenelbe mit Elbvorland, it features Europe's tallest power line masts (Elbekreuzung 1 and 2) and attracts visitors for recreation amid marshes and birdlife.
