Hidden Lake Gardens
Tipton, United States
Hidden Lake Gardens in Tipton, Michigan, is a 755-acre botanical garden and arboretum managed by Michigan State University.
It was founded in 1926 by businessman Harry A. Fee, who purchased land around a kettle lake with the vision of creating picturesque natural landscapes. Realizing the land was unsuitable for farming, he developed it into nursery stock and planted many trees and shrubs, later donating the property to Michigan State University in 1945 to become a public garden.
The site includes diverse natural areas like oak-hickory forests, wetlands, glacial kettleholes, and open fields, along with cultivated gardens such as the Bonsai and Penjing Garden, Herb Garden, and a large conservatory housing tropical and arid plants. Visitors can explore over 12 miles of hiking trails, a canopy walk, and the scenic lake while enjoying year-round events, education programs, and art exhibits focused on plant science and conservation.
The gardens are celebrated for their blend of natural beauty, horticultural excellence, and public engagement.
