Hinglaj Mata Temple
Balochistan, Pakistan
Hinglaj Mata Temple, nestled deep within the rugged terrain of Hingol National Park in Balochistan, is one of the most sacred and storied Hindu pilgrimage sites in Pakistan—and among the 51 revered Shakti Peethas in the subcontinent. Known also as Nani Mandir, this cave temple is believed to mark the spot where the Brahmarandhra (crown of the head) of Goddess Sati fell, imbuing the land with immense spiritual power.
Unlike many temples, Hinglaj Mata has no sculpted idol. Instead, a naturally formed stone within the cave is venerated, smeared with vermilion and surrounded by offerings of coconuts, flowers, and heartfelt prayers. The site is guarded by Bhimlochana Bhairava, a fierce protector in Tantric tradition, symbolizing the balance of divine feminine and masculine energies.
The annual Hinglaj Yatra, held in spring, draws over 250,000 pilgrims from across Pakistan, India, and the Gulf. Pilgrims trek through the desert, scale the sacred Chandragup mud volcano, and bathe in the Hingol River before reaching the shrine—a journey of both physical endurance and spiritual purification.
