Hohensyburg Burgruine
Dortmund, Germany, Germany
Hohensyburg Burgruine in Dortmund, Germany, occupies Syberg hill above the Ruhr valley, originating as a Saxon hillfort called Sigiburg conquered by Charlemagne in 775 during the Saxon Wars and later rebuilt around 1100 as a stone castle by the Counts of Dortmund.
Partially destroyed in 1287 by Count Eberhard I von der Mark, it served as an imperial fief of the Counts of Mark from 1300 before falling into disuse by the early 17th century, leaving visible remnants of its main building, walls, and towers as a protected monument today.
Now a popular park destination with panoramic views, it neighbors the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument, Vincke Tower, and St. Peter church, blending medieval ruins with trails and cultural sites.
