Hohenzollernschloss Sigmaringen
Sigmaringen, Germany, Germany
Hohenzollernschloss Sigmaringen is a historic castle located on a rocky cliff above the Danube River in Sigmaringen, Germany, with origins dating back to around 1077.
The castle originally served as a fortress with thick walls and a tall bergfried (keep) for defense, featuring rounded towers, a gatehouse, and an inner courtyard. Over the centuries, the castle underwent various expansions and renovations, notably in the 15th century under the Count of Werdenberg and again in the early 17th century with Renaissance influences.
In the 17th century, architect Hans Alberthal transformed the fortress into a more magnificent palace, and later Baroque and Gothic Revival styles were incorporated, especially after a major fire in 1893 necessitated extensive reconstruction led by Emanuel von Siedl. The present castle combines medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and historicist architectural elements, maintaining its position as the ancestral seat of the Princes of Hohenzollern.
It is known for features such as the weapons hall and the Gallery of Ancestors, with its layout integrating the original medieval fortress foundations. The castle plays a significant cultural role and remains a symbol of the Hohenzollern family legacy.
