Established in 1991, the gardens are a nonprofit project organized by volunteers with the goal of creating a world-class botanical garden that showcases both native and exotic plants. The site was originally a hog farm, but it has since been transformed into diverse landscapes including meadows, wetlands, and a native plant garden emphasizing the flora of the Humboldt region and broader Pacific areas.

The gardens feature well-maintained pathways winding through themed areas such as the Arnot Family Garden of the Four Seasons, Sara's Garden, Marie’s Terrace, and the Dr. Stan J. Baird’s Rose Garden, along with a Temperate Woodland Garden and a Pollinator Garden. They offer educational programs, workshops, and events, and serve as a center for conservation and community involvement.

Over the years, the gardens have gained recognition for their commitment to native plant preservation and environmental education, attracting visitors with magnificent views of Humboldt Bay and the Pacific Ocean and providing both tranquil beauty and opportunities for learning.
