Hunburg (Burgholz)
Germany, Germany
Hunburg (Burgholz) is the vanished ruin of an early medieval spur castle on a 368-meter spur above the Wohra River west of Burgholz, a district of Kirchhain in Hesse's Marburg-Biedenkopf region, Germany.
Likely built in the 8th century by Carolingians as a border fortress during Charlemagne's era, it formed an irregular oval shield-shaped enclosure roughly 200 by 100 meters, separated by a neck ditch and featuring a pincer gate in its mortared walls.
Declining after Fulda Abbey constructed Burg Rauschenberg around 1060, it passed as a fief to Ritter Johann von Riedesel in 1337, remained partially inhabited until acquired by Hesse post-1401, and served as a quarry until around 1900, leaving scant traces today alongside a 1968 28.5-meter Hunburgturm observation tower offering panoramic views.
