Idstein Castle
Germany, Germany
Idstein Castle in Idstein, Germany, began as a medieval hill fortress around 1170, serving as the residence of the Counts of Nassau-Idstein with surviving elements like the bergfried tower, 15th-century gatehouse, and the iconic Hexenturm or Witches' Tower.
Expanded in the early 17th century into a Renaissance palace under Prince George Augustus Samuel, it features Baroque interiors completed around 1714 by architect Maximilian von Welsch, including the ornate Emperor Chamber.
Today, the castle houses the Pestalozzi Gymnasium school, offers guided tours with costumed gardeners, a Renaissance garden, and a plaque commemorating 1676 witch trial victims, blending history with scenic old-town views.
