Imperial Palace, Gelnhausen
Gelnhausen, Germany, Germany
The Imperial Palace in Gelnhausen, Germany, known as Kaiserpfalz Gelnhausen or Barbarossaburg, is a well-preserved Romanesque ruin built by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa between 1160-1180 on a former island in the Kinzig River.
This strategic Hohenstaufen fortress controlled trade routes and imperial lands in the Wetterau region, hosting key events like the 1180 Hoftag court that stripped Henry the Lion of his fiefs. Featuring original walls on 12,000 oak piles, a palas hall, keep, and arcaded facades amid scenic parklands, it stands as the best surviving Staufer palace today.
