in Hamborn Botanical Garden
Duisburg, Germany, Germany
The Hamborn Botanical Garden (Botanischer Garten Duisburg-Hamborn) in Duisburg, Germany is a municipal botanical garden and aquarium located at Fürst-Pückler-Straße 18 near the Hamborner Stadtwald.
Originally established in 1906 as a botanical garden with tropical and subtropical greenhouses, it was converted into an elaborate parkland with perennials and herb gardens between 2012 and 2014 after the greenhouses were closed in 2011 due to their poor condition and the city's decision against costly renovation.
The garden now features about 1,000 outdoor plant species from temperate climate zones including Germany, Japan, China, and North America, along with specialties such as a Heide and rhododendron landscape, perennials and farmer's gardens, citrus and olive trees in an orange-rei, a lily pond, and notable specimens like the giant mammoth leaf plant and the Kaisereiche oak.
The site also maintains an aquarium with eleven display aquariums and breeding tanks maintained by the Society for Aquatic Science, plus an annual fuchsia exhibition. The garden is open daily from 8:00 AM until dusk (latest 9:00 PM) with free admission, while the orange-rei and aquarium have specific hours from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM in October-April and 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM in May-September.
