International Peace Garden
Boissevain, United States
The International Peace Garden, located near Boissevain on the border between North Dakota and Manitoba, Canada, was conceived in 1928 by Canadian horticulturist Dr. Henry J. Moore as a living monument to peace and friendship between the United States and Canada.
The site was selected for its central position in North America, with Manitoba donating 1,451 acres and North Dakota 888 acres to form the garden. Dedicated on July 14, 1932, to a crowd of over 50,000 people, the garden was developed with the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps, who created paths, structures, and landscape features using native materials.
Notable features include the Peace Chapel built from Manitoba limestone with stained glass windows, the Carillon Bell Tower, a 37-meter Peace Tower, a floral clock, and a 9/11 memorial incorporating steel from the World Trade Center. The garden hosts various floral displays, sculptures, picnic areas, and an interpretive center, serving as a powerful symbol of the enduring peaceful relationship between the two nations and a site for cultural events and education in peace and friendship.
