Isegran Fort
Fredrikstad, Norway, Norway
Isegran Fort is a historic fortress on a small island in the Glomma River estuary near Fredrikstad, Norway, first mentioned in 1287 as a defensive structure built by Alv Erlingsson, Earl of Borgarsyssel, to protect against invasions. Expanded in the 1670s with a battery platform, tower (1674–1742), and skansen fortifications as part of Fredrikstad's defenses, it served as Norway's only naval harbor until 1680 and a key base for admiral Peter Wessel Tordenskiold during the Great Northern War. The site includes Fredrikstad's oldest wooden building, the 300-year-old Empire House, and is accessible by bridge or ferry, now a cultural heritage area with ruins, shipyard for traditional boats, and scenic views.
