The castle is built on high ground overlooking the city, positioned on the slopes above the Anbar Ab (water reservoir) area, with the Dalab valley to its north and the urban area of Ilam to its south, giving it a commanding view of the surrounding region. Its origins date to the historical periods after the arrival of Islam in Iran, and it is associated with the later medieval to early modern Islamic-era fort tradition in the Zagros region, rather than with the Sasanian or pre-Islamic castle-building traditions.
