It forms part of the larger Izadkhast complex, which also includes a caravanserai and a Safavid-period bridge, and the site is noted for its unusual hilltop setting and layered history from the Sasanian to Qajar periods. The castle is also known for being one of the largest mud-brick structures in the world and for its strong defensive position on natural bedrock.
