Jagdschloss Gelbensande
Gelbensande, Germany, Germany
Jagdschloss Gelbensande in Gelbensande, Germany, was built between 1884 and 1887 as a summer residence and hunting lodge for Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and his wife, Grand Duchess Anastasia Michailovna Romanova, designed in English Landhaus style by architect Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel to blend into the surrounding Rostocker Heide forest.
Initiated after the duke's 1878 health retreat charmed the couple, it features picturesque turrets, a wooden Russian-inspired entrance canopy with Tsarist eagles, and health-focused interiors, serving as a family retreat for Mecklenburg royals until 1944.
Post-WWII it functioned as a hospital, tuberculosis sanatorium, library, and communal housing before municipal ownership post-reunification; now privately held since 2008, it operates as a museum, wedding venue, and restaurant.
