Jagdschloss Wabern
Wabern, Hesse, Germany
Jagdschloss Wabern in Hesse, Germany, was built between 1701 and 1712 by Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Kassel primarily as a hunting and pleasure lodge near the confluence of the Eder and Schwalm rivers.
The Baroque-style palace was designed by court architect Johann Conrad Giesler on swampy ground stabilized with piles. It featured a main building with two wings connected by galleries, a French-style park, and an orangery added in 1704. The lodge was a favored retreat for the landgrave and later his family, who expanded it in 1770 with pavilions designed by Simon Louis du Ry.
During the Seven Years' War, it served as headquarters for Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick. Famous guests included Voltaire, who stayed in 1753. The castle later served various roles including military headquarters, but today it is noted for its historical architecture and parkland reflecting its origins as a noble hunting estate.
