Jaromarsburg
Putgarten, Germany, Germany
Jaromarsburg in Putgarten, Germany, was a major Slavic temple fortress from the 9th to 12th centuries, dedicated to the god Svantovit (or Svetovid) by the Rani tribe on the cliffs of Cape Arkona in northern Rügen.
Protected by steep coastal cliffs on two sides and a massive landward rampart up to 13 meters high, it housed a wooden temple with a towering 4-meter oak idol used for harvest prophecies via a ceremonial drinking horn.
Danish King Valdemar I destroyed it in 1168 after a siege, forcing Christianization; today, erosion has shrunk the site, which remains an inaccessible archaeological landmark viewable from nearby towers amid scenic walking paths.
