Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz Botanical Garden
Mainz, Germany, Germany
The Botanischer Garten der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, also known as the Botanischer Garten Mainz, is a 10-hectare scientific and educational botanical garden maintained by Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, located on the university campus at Anselm-Franz-von-Bentzel-Weg 9 in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and open daily to visitors.
Created between 1946 and 1955 on land that was formerly farmland and a military training ground, the garden features over 3,500 individual plant beds with an alpine garden added in the mid-1950s and sections for steppe plants and regional Mainz flora established in 1986. Today it contains about 8,500 plant species from nearly all regions of the world, organized into major sections including a 30,000 m² arboretum, systematic garden, extensive greenhouse complex, and alpine garden, with outdoor collections focusing on flowering and woody plants from the northern hemisphere temperate zone and greenhouses housing plants from Mediterranean climates, the Southern Hemisphere, and tropical and subtropical regions.
The garden serves as a fundamental component of the university supporting research and student teaching, maintains one of Europe's largest research collections of Salvia (sage) plants, actively participates in preserving the rare flora of Rhineland-Palatinate by cultivating endangered species, and is part of the global Botanic Gardens Conservation International network. Beyond its scientific role, it offers guided tours year-round, hosts cultural events and exhibitions, provides a peaceful place for relaxation on the campus, and maintains a seed list dating back to 1950.
