Verified Kachaghakaberd

Azerbaijan, Armenia

Kachaghakaberd (meaning “Magpie Fortress” in Armenian) is an ancient mountain-top fortress located between the villages of Kolatak and Patara in the historic Artsakh region, which is currently part of Azerbaijan but has a predominantly Armenian cultural heritage.

Perched at an altitude of 1,500–1,700 meters above sea level, the fortress sits atop a rocky pinnacle surrounded by sheer vertical limestone cliffs reaching 50–150 meters tall, making it incredibly difficult to access and historically impregnable. Its name comes from a legend that the fortress was so inaccessible that only magpies could reach its summit.

The fortress served as an important fortification of the medieval Armenian Principality of Khachen during the High Middle Ages, particularly in the 8th century when it was used to defend against Arab invasions, and later construction dates suggest 12th–13th century origins.

Access is possible only from the southern or southwest side via a difficult, narrow path, and the fortress measures approximately 160 meters long by 75 meters wide, with remnants of defensive walls standing up to 1.7 meters high and constructed from semi-finished stones bound with lime mortar.
