Kaindy Lake
Almaty Region, Kazakhstan
Kaindy Lake, located in the Almaty Region of Kazakhstan within Kolsai Lakes National Park, is one of the country’s most unusual and beautiful natural attractions.
The lake was formed after the 1911 Kebin Earthquake triggered a massive landslide that created a natural dam, flooding a spruce forest and creating the lake. The lake is famous for its striking turquoise water and the tall trunks of submerged Schrenk's spruce trees that still rise above the surface, giving it the appearance of a “sunken forest.” The cold mountain water has preserved many of the underwater trees for over a century, creating a unique and almost surreal landscape.
Surrounded by the scenic Tian Shan Mountains, Kaindy Lake is a popular destination for hiking, photography, and nature tourism. Its combination of clear water, submerged forest, and dramatic mountain scenery makes it one of the most remarkable natural landmarks in Kazakhstan.
