Lake Zaysan
East Kazakhstan Region, Kazakhstan
Lake Zaysan is a large freshwater lake located in the East Kazakhstan Region, nestled between the Altai and Tarbagatai mountain ranges at an altitude of about 420 meters. It stretches roughly 105 kilometers in length and varies between 22 to 48 kilometers in width, covering an area around 1,800 square kilometers.
The lake is quite shallow, with a maximum depth of about 15 meters. It receives water mainly from the Black Irtysh River and several smaller tributaries, while its main outflow is the Irtysh River. Due to the construction of the Bukhtarma Dam downstream, the lake's water level has risen by about 6 meters, effectively doubling its size in some descriptions.
Lake Zaysan is thought to be one of the oldest lakes in the world, possibly dating back over 60 million years, which adds to its scientific and natural importance. The surrounding region features diverse landscapes including mountains, forests, and plains, making it a rich habitat for wildlife. The lake supports a vibrant fishing industry, with species such as trout, carp, pike, and sturgeon abundant in its waters.
The environment around the lake remains relatively unspoiled due to limited industrial activity, making it a valuable natural resource and a tranquil destination for nature lovers and fishing enthusiasts.
