Kashmar
Iran, Iran
Kashmar is a historic city in Razavi Khorasan province in northeastern Iran, serving as the capital of Kashmar County and lying south of Mashhad near the Shesh Taraz (Sish Taraz) River in a semi-desert climate.
Historically known as Torshiz, it has roots going back at least to the Sasanian era and grew as a stop on trade routes, later suffering damage in medieval conflicts but remaining an important regional center.
The modern city has a population of just over 100,000 people and is noted for agriculture, especially vineyards that produce many varieties of grapes and raisins, as well as saffron and traditional Persian carpets. Kashmar is also known as a religious and cultural destination, with several shrines and historic mosques and monuments, including the tomb of Seyyed Hassan Modarres, the Atashgah Castle and man‑made cave, old ice storage structures (yakhchāl), and a Qajar-era citadel that reflect its long architectural and religious heritage.
