Kassel Botanical Garden
Kassel, Germany, Germany
The Botanischer Garten Kassel (Botanical Garden Kassel) is a municipal botanical garden, also known as Botanischer Garten der Stadt Kassel, located in Park Schönfeld at Bosestraße 15 in the Wehlheiden district of Kassel, Hesse, Germany, and is freely open to the public daily without charge.
The garden was first created in 1912 as a 1.5-hectare school garden separated from Park Schönfeld, was used for vegetable growing between World War I and World War II, became a botanical garden in 1948 that was redesigned in 1955 for the Bundesgartenschau (federal horticultural show), was converted into a public park in 1982, and was restored starting in 2002–2003 with the aim of re-establishing its 1950s-era features and creating new theme gardens.
Today it is considered a gem of Kassel garden art in the style of the 1950s, featuring themed gardens, a rose garden, a medicinal herb garden, perennials, rhododendrons, water basins, pavilions, and a distinctive avenue of 70 Kaiser lime trees (Kaiserlinden). The garden's cactus house exhibits approximately 300 cacti and succulents and serves as a popular venue for weddings, while the garden itself is used for literary walks, art, music, theatre, and light installations, with the Environment and Garden Department regularly hosting plant exchanges in May and October under the lime tree avenue.
