Kassel Castle
Pelm, Germany, Germany
Kassel Castle, also known as Kasselburg, is a well-preserved medieval hilltop ruin on a 490-meter basalt massif in Pelm near Gerolstein, Germany, in the Vulkaneifel region.
Dating back to the 12th century with its iconic 37-meter double tower serving as both gate and residence, it passed to Gerhard V of Blankenheim in 1335, founding a noble line that ended in 1406, later owned by families like Loen-Heinsberg, Arenberg, and Trier electors amid frequent disputes.
After French seizure in 1794 and Prussian control in 1815, King Frederick William IV initiated 19th-century repairs, making it a popular hiking site today with panoramic views, Romanesque elements, a chapel, and an accessible tower.
