Kathmandu Durbar Square
Kathmandu, Nepal
Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square or Basantapur Durbar, is a historic royal palace complex in the heart of Kathmandu, Nepal.
It dates back as far as the 3rd century but gained prominence under the Malla dynasty between the 12th and 18th centuries. The square served as the political and ceremonial center, housing palaces, courtyards, and over 50 temples showcasing Newari artistry with intricate wood carvings and pagoda-style architecture.
Key landmarks include the Hanuman Dhoka Palace named after the Hindu monkey god Hanuman, the Taleju Temple dedicated to the royal goddess, the Kumari Ghar residence of the living goddess Kumari, and the ancient Kasthamandap believed to be built from a single tree. The site reflects a rich blend of religious, royal, and cultural history, though it suffered damage in the 2015 earthquake with ongoing restoration efforts keeping its heritage alive.
