Kauzenburg
Bad Kreuznach, Germany, Germany
Kauzenburg is a historic castle ruin crowning the Kauzenberg hill in Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, built around 1206 by the Counts of Sponheim to oversee the New Town (Neustadt) development west of the Nahe River.
Expanded into a fortress over centuries with outer works and reaching peak size around 1650, it was dramatically destroyed in 1689 by French troops under Louis XIV during his conquests, leaving only the vaulted cellar amid the rubble.
Reimagined in the 19th century as a bourgeois manor house and redesigned in 1972 by architect Gottfried Böhm with modern crenellation-like elements, it now operates as a restaurant offering medieval banquets and sweeping panoramic views of the town, river, and vineyards.
