Kayan Fortress (also known as Kayan Berd, Dsevank, or Haghpatavank Fortress) is a medieval Armenian fortress and former monastery located in the Lori Province of northern Armenia, on a narrow, high promontory between the villages of Haghpat and Akner, about 2 km west of the famous Haghpat Monastery and overlooking the Debed River canyon.

The fortress was built in 1233 by Bishop Hovhannes, the abbot of Haghpat Monastery and nephew of the powerful Zakare and Ivane Zakaryan princes, to protect the monastery’s wealth, monks, and the surrounding villages from external threats, and it was designed as a compact but strong defensive citadel with massive walls and about 15 pyramid-shaped towers stretching roughly 120 meters from south to north and up to 20 meters wide.

Its position on a cliff surrounded by deep gorges on three sides gave it natural protection, while the high viewpoint allowed defenders to see approaching enemies and warn Haghpat and nearby settlements, making it an important strategic foothold in medieval Armenia.
