Kharanagh Castle
Kharanaq, Iran, Iran
Kharanagh Castle, located in the village of Kharanaq in Yazd Province, Iran, dates back approximately 1,800 years to the Sassanid era.
It covers about one hectare and features high, thick walls, six watchtowers, a large central courtyard, and numerous rooms, making it a formidable desert fortress. The castle's design includes multi-story homes, narrow covered passages, and a moat to protect against bandits and invaders.
Notably, it is built with local materials like adobe bricks and clay, which regulate temperature and provide durability. The village also has a distinctive shaking minaret from the Sassanid period, later completed by the Seljuks, serving both as a watchtower and lantern.
Alongside the castle are historic structures such as a traditional bathhouse, mosques, a bridge combining Sassanid and Roman architectural styles, water mills powered by qanat water, and hand-carved shelters known as Bokenha. The entire area reflects ancient Persian ingenuity in architecture, defense, and community planning, maintaining significant cultural and historical importance.
