Khavidak Castle
Iran, Iran
Khavidak Castle is a historic fortified structure located in the village of Khavidak, about 20 kilometers south of Yazd in Iran’s Yazd Province, and it is recognized as one of the region’s oldest surviving castles.
Built mainly of unbaked brick, clay, and gypsum, the castle covers roughly 2,250 square meters and is organized around three north–south corridors that separate four rows of rooms, many of which were originally two or three stories high with vaulted and arched ceilings. Scholars date its origins to the Sassanian period (before Islam), though the castle was later used and modified in the Islamic era, particularly during the 9th–10th centuries AH, and it was registered as a national heritage site in Iran in 2005 (registration number 13,029).
The fortress was designed as a defensive refuge for villagers: in times of attack by raiders, people could enter the castle, which was surrounded by a defensive ditch (about 10 meters wide in historical accounts) and linked to a water qanat system that also supported nearby agriculture and a small water mill. Today, Khavidak Castle is an important tourist and historical attraction near Yazd, valued for its distinctive desert architecture, layered room structures, and its role in illustrating how settlements in arid regions organized defense, water management, and daily life around fortified centers.
