Kieler Schloss (Kiel Castle)
Kiel, Germany, Germany
Kieler Schloss, or Kiel Castle, originated as a medieval fortress built around 1242 by Count Adolf IV of Schauenburg to protect the newly founded city of Kiel on a peninsula in the Kieler Förde, Germany.
Expanded into a Renaissance palace from 1558–1568 under Duke Adolf and further modified with baroque elements like the Rantzaubau wing in 1695–1697, it served as a ducal residence until severely damaged in World War II and mostly demolished afterward.
The current stark brick cube structure, rebuilt 1961–1963 inspired by its historical form, functions as a modern concert hall called the "Schloss" within Kiel's cultural quarter.
