Killington Resort in Killington, Vermont, the largest ski area in the eastern U.S., opened on December 13, 1958, on Killington Peak, spearheaded by Preston Leete Smith and Perry H. Merrill after years of planning on land tied to early 20th-century hotels and carriage roads, starting with four slopes and pioneering snowmaking in the 1960s for reliable coverage amid low-snow seasons.

Spanning seven peaks with 155 trails, 22 lifts including the Canyon Express, and extensive terrain parks across 1,509 skiable acres boasting the most snowmaking in North America, it expanded rapidly with beginner-friendly access from every lift, drawing 300,000 visitors by the late 1960s through ownership shifts like S-K-I Ltd. in 1984 and Powdr Corporation in 2007. 

Beyond winter skiing and snowboarding for all levels, the four-season destination offers summer mountain biking, ATV tours, hiking, disc golf, a high ropes course, and events at base lodges like the Peak Lodge, cementing its status as a premier East Coast adventure hub.
