Kjeller
Norway, Norway
Kjeller is a village in Akershus county, Norway, best known as the site of Norway's first airport, Kjeller Airfield, established in September 1912 for the Norwegian Army Air Service after pilots scouted flat terrain near Lillestrøm, just 25 km northeast of Oslo. The airfield saw its first flight on September 21, 1912, with a Maurice Farman biplane hauled by horse, later expanding during World War I with hangars and Hærens Flyvemaskinfabrikk aircraft factory relocating there in 1916, where Roald Amundsen trained as a pilot in 1913. Today it serves as the Royal Norwegian Air Force's main maintenance base under Norwegian Defence Logistics Organization, with civilian operations via Kjeller Aero Senter, alongside the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) founded in 1946 and a former Telenor research center now housing OsloMet's campus.
