Kloster Huysburg
Huy, Germany, Germany
Kloster Huysburg is a historic Benedictine monastery perched on the Huy hill near Huy in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, with roots tracing back to a Frankish border fortress established around 790 by Charlemagne.
Formally founded in 1080 by Halberstadt Bishop Burchard II following earlier hermitages and a chapel consecrated in 1058, it thrived through medieval reforms like the 1444 Bursfelde Congregation before enduring devastation in the Peasants' War, Schmalkaldic War, and Thirty Years' War, yet survived the Reformation as one of few Catholic strongholds under the 1648 Peace of Westphalia.
Dissolved in 1804 under Prussian secularization, it later housed a seminary and became East Germany's sole Benedictine monastery in 1972 with Polish monks, now serving as an active priory, pilgrimage site on the Romanesque Road and Jakobsweg, with Romanesque church, scenic views, and cultural events.
