Kluvensieker Schleuse
Bovenau, Germany, Germany
Kluvensieker Schleuse is a well-preserved lock from the historic Eider Canal in Bovenau, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, built between 1777 and 1784 under Danish rule to link the Baltic Sea at Kiel with the North Sea via the Eider River, bypassing the dangerous Skagen route.
Featuring innovative Dutch-inspired design with a 35m-long main chamber for ships up to 160 tons and a 5m-wide side chamber for water regulation, it lowered vessels by about 2.5 meters and handled over 300,000 ships until the Kiel Canal opened in 1895.
Now a technical cultural monument with restored chambers, an 1849 cast-iron swing bridge, former lockkeeper's house, horse-changing station, and surrounding canal paths, it attracts tourists exploring Schleswig-Holstein's industrial heritage.
