Takht-e Soleyman Archaeological Site
Iran, Iran
Takht-e Soleyman, meaning تخت سلیمان, is an archaeological site in northwestern Iran's West Azerbaijan province, known for its rich history spanning over 3,000 years.
This site was a major center for Zoroastrian worship during the Sasanian era (224-651 CE) and featured a large fire temple dedicated to Anahita, surrounded by fortified walls with 38 towers and two main gates.
The area also includes remnants of an Ilkhanid palace built in the 13th century, blending Mongol and Persian architectural styles. The complex was destroyed by Byzantine forces in 627 CE but later revived. It is situated near a volcanic mountain called Zendan-e Soleyman, or the "Prison of Solomon," which holds additional ancient shrines and temples.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Takht-e Soleyman is significant for its cultural, religious, and architectural heritage, reflecting Iran's ancient civilizations and their influence on Islamic architecture.
