Korshahi Castle
Isfahan Province, Iran
Korshahi Castle, also known as Karshahi Castle, is a historic fortress located in the Isfahan Province of Iran, near Aran va Bidgol. Its foundations date back to the pre-Islamic Sasanian era, making it an ancient and significant site. The castle is one of the largest adobe castles in Iran, covering an area of around 8,000 square meters, and it is constructed mainly from sandy soil and adobe bricks.
The architecture is primarily defensive, featuring thick walls with two layers separated by a water-filled ditch, five watchtowers, and secret subterranean tunnels to protect against invaders. The castle has a square layout with two courtyards, including a central one and another that housed slaves, along with multiple rooms designed for different seasonal uses. Its design allowed inhabitants to defend themselves effectively, with a hidden qanat water supply ensuring access to drinking water during sieges.
Known historically as the "Thieves’ Castle" due to its use by bandits in the Qajar period, it today stands as a testament to ancient military engineering and offers impressive views of the surrounding desert landscape. Visitors can access the castle via several routes, with the best times to visit being spring and autumn due to the climate.
