Köthen Castle, or Schloss Köthen, is a historic moated palace in the town of Köthen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, originally built as a castle between 1156 and 1160 on Slavic-era foundations and serving as the residence of Anhalt princes and dukes from 1244 to 1847.
Destroyed by fire in 1547, it was rebuilt in Baroque style over the late 16th and 17th centuries with later Neoclassical interiors added from 1821 to 1833, gaining fame as the place where Johann Sebastian Bach worked as Kapellmeister from 1717 to 1723, composing key secular works there.
Today, it belongs to a Saxony-Anhalt preservation foundation, housing museums on regional history and Bach's legacy.
