Kronberg Castle
Kronberg im Taunus, Germany, Germany
Kronberg Castle is a medieval rock castle built between 1220 and 1230 atop a hill in Kronberg im Taunus, Hochtaunus district, Hesse, Germany, near the Altkönig peak.
Commissioned by the Holy Roman Emperor for the Knights of Eschborn—who became the Lords of Kronberg—it features a well-preserved Romanesque keep from 1170-1200, a middle castle with stone residences from the 14th-15th centuries under the Flügel and Kronen dynasties, and remnants of a lower castle gatehouse and chapel.
Abandoned after the Kronberg line ended in 1704, the ruins now offer guided tours, panoramic Taunus views, and events as a cultural landmark just 20 km from Frankfurt.
