Krosigk
Germany, Germany
Krosigk is a village in the Petersberg municipality within Saxony-Anhalt's Saalekreis district, Germany, about 15 km north of Halle (Saale) at the foot of Petersberg, encompassing the districts of Krosigk, Kaltenmark, and Neue Häuser with around 816 residents.
Founded by Sorbs in the 7th century as a Slavic settlement possibly named after a river confluence, it features prehistoric finds and centers around a 9th-10th century stone water castle, one of the region's oldest, with a preserved bergfried tower that served as the ancestral seat of the von Krosigk noble family.
Owned by the von Trotha family from 1451 to 1813, the castle was destroyed by Swedish forces in 1644, rebuilt around 1700 into a manor house with a chapel, and now functions as a youth home for orphans and children with psychological needs; nearby landmarks include a late-Romanesque fortified church from circa 1150 with von Trotha gravestones, a 16th/17th-century watermill, an 18th-century post mill, and a dovecote amid hilly terrain with springs, streams, ponds, orchards, and nature monuments.
