Kumayl ibn Ziyad
Between Najaf and Kufa, Yemen
Kumayl ibn Ziyad al-Nakha'i was a devoted companion of Imam Ali and a tabi'un (successor generation), born around 633 CE from the Nakha'i tribe, who rose to prominence during the caliphates of Uthman and Ali for his piety, humility, and leadership in Kufa.
Appointed governor of Hit by Imam Ali, he participated in battles like Siffin, transmitted key teachings including the famous Dua Kumayl—a profound supplication taught to him by Ali—and opposed Umayyad rule, joining the Ibn al-Ash'ath revolt.
Executed in 708 CE on orders of al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf after fleeing persecution, his tomb lies in Thuwayya between Najaf and Kufa, a site revered by pilgrims for his enduring spiritual legacy.
