Kurfürstliches Schloss
Mainz, Germany, Germany
The Kurfürstliches Schloss in Mainz is the former city residence of the Prince‑electors and archbishops of Mainz, who ruled the Mainz Kurstaat in the Holy Roman Empire.
Built between 1627 and 1752 as a grand late‑Renaissance palace right on the Rhine, it replaced the older Martinsburg fortress and now forms a striking 75‑meter‑long sandstone‑facade building that is one of Mainz’s most prominent architectural landmarks.
Despite heavy damage in the Second World War it was carefully reconstructed and today serves mainly as a large event and conference venue, including as the main stage for Mainz’s famous televised Fastnacht (carnival) session, while still standing as a symbol of the city’s historic role as a powerful ecclesiastical and electoral center.
