Verified Kurmainzer Amtshof

Heppenheim, Germany

The Kurmainzer Amtshof in Heppenheim, Germany, is a historic building complex dating back to the late 14th century, originally constructed as a fortified pentagonal structure combining rubble stone and half-timbered elements in the late Gothic style.

It functioned as the administrative center for the Electorate of Mainz's Upper Erzstift region. After destruction in a 1369 city fire and subsequent restoration by the end of the 14th century, the Amtshof later lost administrative significance after the Thirty Years’ War and was simplified in 1693.

The building is notable as the founding site of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) of Germany in 1948, where Theodor Heuss was elected its first chairman. Today, the Amtshof houses the Museum Heppenheim, which presents local history from early settlements through modern times, featuring exhibitions on the Starkenburg castle, city life, cultural artifacts, and key historical periods including the Wilhelmine era and post-war developments.

The site includes the Kurfürstensaal with Gothic angel frescoes and Renaissance murals, providing visitors with rich cultural and historical insights within a setting that connects medieval, Renaissance, and modern heritage.
