La Brea is a town in southwestern Trinidad, located northeast of Point Fortin and southwest of San Fernando, best known for the Pitch Lake, the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world.
The Pitch Lake spans approximately 100 acres and is about 250 feet deep at its center, holding an estimated ten million tons of pitch. This natural asphalt lake has significant economic and cultural importance, as it supplies asphalt for various products like road construction and automotive coatings.
The lake also holds a special place in local legends and indigenous history, with Amerindian pottery and prehistoric animal remains having been found there.
