Lake Naivasha

Nakuru County, Kenya

Lake Naivasha is Kenya’s second-largest freshwater lake, located in Nakuru County about 96–100 kilometers northwest of Nairobi in the Great Rift Valley at an elevation of approximately 1,884 meters (6,181 feet). Its name comes from the Maasai word nai’posha, meaning “rough water,” referring to the sudden violent storms that frequently arise on its surface. The lake covers roughly 139–198 square kilometers (depending on rainfall) and is surrounded by 64 square kilometers of swamp, fed mainly by the Malewa and Gilgil rivers with no visible surface outlet but an assumed underground drainage. It is a major wildlife haven, hosting over 400 bird species (including fish eagles, pelicans, kingfishers, and cormorants), a large population of hippos, and freshwater fish like tilapia and black bass. Key attractions include boat tours to Crescent Island (a car-free habitat where visitors can walk among giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, and waterbuck) and nearby Hell’s Gate National Park, known for its dramatic cliffs, gorges, and rare bearded vultures. The surrounding area is Kenya’s heart of floriculture, with extensive flower farms exporting roses globally, and the lake also supports local fishing and tourism.
